Most of the times players spend so much time thinking about the relative merits of different rackets and invest significant money in buying them or changing them, one thing everyone ignores is how good your racket can perform by installing right type of strings with appropriate tension.

With thousands of strings available in the market it gets really difficult to choose the right strings; by referring to some of the basic details you can narrow your choice.

Things you need to know about a string

Construction of a string:
Material used to construct a string and how it performs when installed on a particular racket. Most popular types of strings based on the construction are

• Monofilament – consists of polyester or a mixture of different materials as solid extrusion of material. These are more durable and more playable.
• Multifilament – consists of number of strands of material twisted together. These are much closer to natural gut and offer great playability and shock absorption.
• Natural Gut – very few manufacturers left for this type made from cows and sheep. Offers enhanced playability and power.

String Gauge:
This is the thickness of the string which is measured in millimetres (MM) the generic facts

• Thinner strings generate more power with higher tension loss after being installed, as the gauge suggests they snap quickly with less durability.
• Thicker strings generate less power with lower tension loss after being installed, and these more durable.

String Tension:
Lower tension generates more power and less control to the player and higher tensions generate less power and more control. This is a kind of Trampoline affect higher the tension lower the power you generate from the string bed.

When do you need to restring you racket

A loss in tension is a good indication of getting your strings replaced, checking your string bed stiffness gives an idea of loss of tension in your racket. Usually suggestion is get your racket restrung after every 40 hours of play.
